Website redesign · Migration without lost addresses

A new website that keeps the search traffic you earned.

A redesign keeps its search traffic when every old address is listed, redirected one by one to its new page and checked after launch. Kodem rebuilds the design and the infrastructure together, and treats the redirect map as a line item in the contract, not an afterthought.

  • One-to-one 301 redirect map
  • New site prepared on a separate preview address
  • Redirects tested on the live site

What a redesign involves

Two jobs in one project: build the new, protect the old.

A company with an existing site has more to lose than one starting from nothing. Years of indexed pages, links from other sites and visitors' bookmarks all point to addresses that a careless rebuild can break overnight.

So we split a redesign into two parallel tracks. One is the new site: design, content structure and code. The other is the migration: an inventory of every URL, a decision for each one, a redirect map and checks on the live site after launch.

If the current site sits on a hosted platform or a plugin-based system, moving to Kodem removes plugin updates from your list. Hosting, security and content changes become our responsibility.

The short versionSearch traffic is kept by a complete address inventory, a one-to-one 301 map and verification after launch. A new design alone does not protect it.
  • Pages that bring traffic keep their titles and main text
  • No bulk redirects to the homepage, no redirect chains
  • Your domain stays registered in your name

Timing

Five signs the current site has reached its limit.

One sign can usually be fixed in place. When two or more appear together, waiting tends to cost more than the redesign.

It does not work on a phone

Menus do not open, forms overflow, text is too small. Most visitors arrive on mobile.

Content cannot be updated

New products wait for someone to have time, and the site falls years behind the company.

Visits arrive, enquiries do not

The form fails silently, or there is no clear way to ask for a quote.

Technical problems have piled up

Slow loading, security warnings, indexing errors and broken plugins.

The company changed, the site did not

New product lines, new export markets or a new brand, while the site still describes the old business.

The decision

Design only, or design and infrastructure?

A wrong diagnosis means paying twice. In discovery we review the current site and put the answer in writing.

Migration without lost traffic

Six steps, each one checked with a tool.

These steps appear as separate items in the scope document, so you can see that each one was done.

  1. Address inventoryEvery page, post, product, document and image URL is listed; those with traffic and inbound links are marked using Search Console and analytics data.
  2. A decision per URLKeep, merge, update or retire. Content that earns traffic keeps its heading and main text.
  3. Redirect mapEach old address points to one new address with a single 301. No chains and no blanket redirects.
  4. Technical parityTitles, descriptions, structured data, internal links and image text end up at least as good as before.
  5. Launch and verificationThe site is tested on its preview address, the sitemap is submitted at launch and every redirect is checked automatically on the live site.
  6. MonitoringCrawl errors, 404s, positions and clicks are watched after launch, and any drift is corrected.

Redesign projects

Rebuilds where the old site had real problems.

Pages competing with each other, a broken contact form and a server carrying malicious code.

From 39 pairs of pages competing with each other to zero

Pages covering the same topic were competing against each other in search results. The content was re-planned and moved to custom code with service, area, glossary and regulation pages.

  • 258 old URLs: 0 chains, 0 loops, 0 redirects to 404
  • Competing page pairs: 39 → 0
  • Content on the 39 retained pages: 3,644 → 57,194 words
  • Lighthouse: mobile performance 97, desktop 99; accessibility and SEO 100

How it was measured: Redirects were checked with automated tests, page overlap with a keyword-matching audit, and structured data on 123 pages with a validation tool.

From a form that went nowhere to a working enquiry channel

The old site had no sitemap, opened on four different addresses, and its contact form sent messages nowhere. It was rewritten from scratch while keeping its well-known animated homepage.

  • All 70 old URLs on their new pages with a single 301
  • 0 errors in a 72-page crawl
  • 46-post blog with categories, filters and tables of contents
  • Form protected by CSRF tokens, a bot trap and a backup record

How it was measured: Old URLs were checked with an automated redirect test and pages with a full-site crawl.

From a site taken over by malicious code to a clean, fast catalogue

Malicious code had been planted on the old server. 101 products, each with its own original usage text, were moved to a clean infrastructure together with beekeeping calculators and a glossary.

Questions

Questions about website redesign

Will we lose our Google traffic?

Not if the migration is done properly, and we cannot promise rankings either way. What protects traffic is the method: a full inventory of existing URLs, a one-to-one 301 map, unchanged titles and text on pages that earn traffic, and automated checks of every redirect after launch.

Will the site go offline during the redesign?

No. The new site is built and tested on a separate preview address while the current one keeps running. The switch is a planned server change, and moving business email is planned as its own step.

Will you move our existing content?

Yes, our team does it. Pages that earn traffic and are still accurate are carried over; outdated or duplicate pages are merged or redirected. Blog posts, product pages, documents and images each get a method agreed in advance.

Our site runs on a plugin-based system or a hosted builder. What changes?

We do not use WordPress or ready-made themes; every project is written on our own codebase, and we maintain it ourselves. Plugin updates disappear from your side, and hosting, security and content changes move to our team.

Who updates the site after the redesign?

We do. You send text, images or new pages by email or WhatsApp and our team publishes them. Security, backups and technical maintenance are ours; scope and response times are written into the contract.

What does a redesign cost?

Redesigns are priced on the same plans as new sites, from $1,000 as a one-time fee plus applicable taxes. The volume of existing content and the number of integrations set the final figure in your itemised quote. The Performance plan includes a planned migration with a 301 map for every old URL.

How long does a redesign take?

It depends mainly on how much content there is and how many systems the site connects to. The schedule is agreed after discovery and written into the contract as milestones.
