Root canal treatment (endodontics): treatment stages
An objective description of the stages. Duration and the number of sessions vary from person to person; the indicative flow is planned for you at the examination.
Treatment stages
Examination and X-ray
The source of the complaint is assessed by examination and X-ray, and whether root canal treatment is needed is decided.
Shaping the canals
Under local anaesthesia, the root canals are cleaned and shaped.
Canal filling
The cleaned canals are filled; if needed, the treatment is completed over more than one session.
Final filling or crown
A permanent filling or crown is planned so the tooth can keep functioning.
The information on this page is for general guidance only; the personal assessment, treatment plan and schedule are set by your dentist only after the examination.
