Dental implants: frequently asked questions
General answers to frequently asked questions about this treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Can everyone have an implant?
Suitability depends on factors such as jawbone volume, general health and oral hygiene, and is assessed at the examination. In some cases preparatory procedures are needed first, or a different prosthetic option may be suggested.
How long does treatment take?
The total time depends on whether preparatory procedures are needed, how quickly you heal and the type of crown or bridge. After the examination your dentist shares an indicative timeline for your case.
What is felt during and after the procedure?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia. Some swelling and tenderness may follow; your dentist gives written advice and any medication needed to manage this.
What happens while I have a gap?
During the healing period a temporary prosthesis can be planned for visible areas. This is discussed with you at the examination.
How is an implant looked after?
As with natural teeth: brushing twice a day, interdental brushes or floss, and regular check-ups. Special cleaning aids are shown at the fitting.
